The triple-foldable phone market is going to heat up. After Huawei introduced the world’s first tri-foldable phone, Mate XT, in China, other Chinese OEMs such as OPPO and Tecno also showed their views on the tri-foldable phone. It seems like Samsung doesn’t want to waste too much time going to the market and eating cake.
We recently reported that the US Patent Office published Samsung’s trifoldable phone patent. The patent was filed in 2021 and was only recently approved. Rumors emerged last month that the South Korean giant could launch a triple-folding phone next year, and that’s looking increasingly likely.
Samsung may launch a triple-foldable phone next year, according to a new report by ET News citing unnamed industry sources. It is noteworthy that the company has started developing the product and its design and “release model” will be completed by the end of this month. Multiple sources familiar with the matter said: “Samsung Electronics recently added a foldable phone to its product line. The partners have also started development projects.”
Samsung’s alleged triple-layer phone is expected to have a screen size of around 9-10 inches when unfolded, which is 2 inches larger than the current Samsung Galaxy Z Fold in the market. Similar to the Huawei Mate XT, the phone takes the form of a tablet when opened.
However, there seems to be a difference between Samsung’s triplex phone and the Huawei Mate XT. As mentioned, Samsung’s phone will have a “folding” design with two inward folds, unlike the Mate XT, which folds inward and the other outward. Design choice likely due to reliability issues. Samsung doesn’t seem to want to lose this new form factor, as the foldable phone market, which has become popular in its own right, is now flooded with new players.
