Starlink tested during testing of Quarterhorse Mk 1 supersonic aircraft

Georgia-based Hermeus, which is working on the world’s first hypersonic passenger aircraft, has reportedly integrated a Starlink terminal into its unmanned Quarterhorse Mk1 prototype. 24 Channels. The terminal supports critical beyond-line-of-sight (BVLOS) communications for the prototype during ground testing, and flight testing is planned for 2025.

Boom Supersonic used the Starlink terminal on its escort aircraft during the testing of the XB-1 prototype. The terminal successfully established communications at Mach 0.95 in preparation for the broadcast of the upcoming XB-1 supersonic test flight.

Fast integration of Starlink systems

Both companies underlined the speed at which they are integrating Starlink technology. Hermeus completes integration of satellite internet system into Mk1 of all things within 17 days. After receiving the terminal from SpaceX, engineers spent seven days modeling the terminal’s integration and six days on the physical installation. A successful ground test of the prototype’s remote control system was soon conducted.

For the Boom Supersonic, it took 15 days to integrate Starlink into the T-38 reconnaissance aircraft. The company plans to use the technology to provide live coverage of the XB-1 supersonic test flight planned for next year.

Development of supersonic and hypersonic aviation

In addition to the Halcyon hypersonic passenger aircraft, Hermeus is also developing the Darkhorse military drone. Both projects are based on ongoing testing of the Mk1 prototype at Edwards Air Force Base. All Mk1 subsystems are expected to be tested by the end of 2024.

Boom Supersonic is focusing on the development of the Overture, a full-scale commercial supersonic aircraft, with the XB-1 serving as its enlarged prototype. The company aims to establish Starlink as a reliable solution for supersonic aviation.

The integration of Starlink systems in such projects once again emphasizes their role in supporting advanced aviation technologies. These systems provide vital communications capabilities at unprecedented speeds.
