Huawei phones are making a big comeback. The latest presentation of the Huawei Mate 70 is another sign of the ambition of a manufacturer that seemed doomed but has turned the tables in spectacular fashion.

don’t phone. Huawei’s new flagships, accompanied by the foldable Mate X6, attract attention with their designs and remarkable features. OLED panel, 5,300 mAh battery and new camera set that promises a lot. But the big difference lies in something else.

HarmonyOS NEXT. The new operating system of these terminals, called HarmonyOS NEXT, says goodbye to Android addiction. It is a platform built from scratch and is not even compatible with Android apps. Huawei is thus firmly distinguishing its path from Google’s, which is a real turning point for the future of its terminals.

It all started with Mate 60 Pro. These new devices replace the controversial Mate 60, which received a lot of attention last year. Analysts did not fully understand how Huawei obtained an advanced chip for these terminals, considering the constraints of the trade war between the United States and China.

Huawei conquers the high-end. This terminal reinforced the brand’s prominence as a reference in the high-end product range in China. According to CNN, Huawei’s market share in phones over $600 increased from 11% in the third quarter of 2022 to 33% in the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile Apple collapsed. Until then, Apple dominated this sector in China, but in the same period the situation changed to the opposite: While its share was 72% in the third quarter of 2022, this rate became 52% in the same period of 2024. This is still an exceptional quota, but at this rate Apple’s dominance may change in the short term.

It’s like a resurrection. What is happening with Huawei is mainly due to the brand’s success in China, where it has become a true national success story. The veto imposed by Google in 2019 meant the death of its smartphone division, but the company managed to turn the situation around by focusing on the Chinese market and freeing itself from the dependencies that had previously tied it to American companies. The result is clear: Huawei is shining again in high-end mobile phones, at least in China.
