Motorola phones will receive five Android updates

Motorola has had a terrible software update policy for its phones for a very long time. It offered a maximum of three Android updates, limited to high-end phones only. While mid-range and budget phones only received two updates, most entry-level phones were promised no updates at all.

While Motorola is facing a lot of criticism from its users for offering fewer Android updates, its peers are offering as many as seven updates. Every smart brand listens to its users, and Motorola has done so by making significant changes to its software update policy. The brand has started offering five updates for its new phones.

Here is the list of Motorola phones promised to receive the five Android updates:

  • Motorola Edge 50 Neo
  • Motorola Moto G75
  • Motorola ThinkPhone 25

Edge 50 Neo is the company’s first phone to use the latest software update policy. It also includes two phones released after this: the Moto G75 and ThinkPhone 25. It was surprising to see the Moto G75, a mid-range phone, on the list. Hopefully we’ll see other mid-range phones get the same treatment.

However, Motorola has not made any changes to its update policy for existing devices. This means that even the more expensive Edge 50 models (Edge 50 Pro, Edge 50 Ultra) and premium Razr models released this year won’t receive more than three major updates. This doesn’t seem fair. Motorola should at least offer expanded software support on premium models, as Google has recently done with many Pixels.

Software distribution is another major issue for Motorola phones

While Motorola has addressed part of the equation with its new software update policy (at least for new models), it still has a lot of work to do to strengthen its software distribution. It has been a slow brand when it comes to releasing new Android updates. Take Android 14, for example, which was released in October 2023 but took nearly three months to reach the first Motorola phones.

However, this is not the case in Android 15. In fact, Motorola has done a better job than other popular brands, including Samsung. The beta testing program started in mid-October, and the beta version of One UI 7 (based on Android 15) was released just last week. Immediately after the release of the One UI 7 beta, Motorola started rolling out the stable build for some models, including the Edge 50 Fusion and Edge 50 Ultra.

In this way, Motorola not only increased the number of software updates but also significantly increased the speed of software distribution. We hope the brand will continue to improve in these areas, which will give potential buyers more confidence.
