This facility currently serves as a launch site for rockets and residences for hundreds of SpaceX employees. As part of the move, SpaceX management asked the local government to hold an election to officially designate Starbace as the official city.

The company’s corporate address also moved from Delaware to Texas this year. The decision comes amid Musk’s dissatisfaction with court decisions in Delaware, particularly the case in which the court awarded $56 billion in employment damages against him.

The move echoes Musk’s previous decisions to move the operations of his other companies to Texas. In 2021, Musk moved Tesla’s headquarters from California to Texas, citing a dispute with California officials over COVID-19 quarantine measures at Tesla’s assembly plant.

Observers noted that the move also has clear fiscal incentives, as Texas offers a more favorable tax environment. Around the same time, Elon Musk moved his personal residence to Texas, but Tesla’s research center continues to operate in California, where the company carries out critical development projects.

Musk’s decision to move the headquarters of SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) from California to Texas was also linked to his displeasure with recent changes to California’s gender identity law.

With SpaceX officially relocating to Starbase City, Musk is further strengthening his presence in Texas, where he now has significant business interests spanning aerospace, automotive and social media.
