this year Apple changed screen size iPhone 16 ProWe also expect a change in the size of the screens in the series next year to make it larger than the 2023 iPhone 15 Pro model. iPhone 17. Here’s what we know.
Apple may introduce a new screen size for the standard iPhone 17 model in 2025. The iPhone 17 may measure 6.3 inches instead of 6.1 inches, making it the same size as the current iPhone 16 Pro. With its 6.3-inch size, it will sit between the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus. But Apple may only have one non-pro model in its lineup next year (see below).
Apple is said to be phasing out the Plus model in 2025 due to poor sales, replacing it with a smaller iPhone 17 that could be nicknamed the “iPhone Air”. While the iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be somewhere between the size of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. According to different rumors, Apple decided on screen sizes of 6.55 inches, 6.6 inches and 6.65 inches; which would make it smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but larger than the 17 Pro.
Apple is not currently expected to change the size of the Pro models as it did with the iPhone 16 series this year. This means the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max should be around 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively. But according to InformationThe iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will have “significant design changes” that go beyond screen size. These changes are said to include the use of an aluminum frame instead of titanium, half-aluminum instead of full glass, a half-glass back and a rectangular camera bump.
iPhone 16 models (2024) | iPhone 17 models (2025) |
---|---|
iPhone 16: 6.1 inches | iPhone 17: 6.3 inches |
iPhone 16 Plus: 6.7 inches | iPhone 17 Air: 6.5-6.6 inches |
iPhone 16 Pro: 6.3 inches | iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3 inches |
iPhone 16 Pro Max: 6.9 inches | iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9 inches |
120 Hz Promotion on the entire line
Apple plans to expand ProMotion to all iPhone models in 2025, allowing all models to increase the refresh rate to 120 Hz for smoother scrolling and video content when needed. Previously, only “Pro” models in Apple’s iPhone series had this feature. Specifically, ProMotion will reduce the screen refresh rate on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 “Air” to the more energy-efficient 1Hz refresh rate, allowing for an always-on display that can display the lock screen clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper. even if the device is locked.
More energy-saving displays
Recent unconfirmed rumors suggest that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models may feature a new display technology known as Low Dielectric TEE (Electrically Enhanced Conduction). This term probably refers to the use of low dielectric constant materials in the thin film encapsulation (TFE) of the display. Although it is not yet clear what this particular innovation offers, the use of low-dielectric materials could reduce signal interference and power loss in general, leading to more efficient power usage and potentially longer battery life.
Scratch-resistant, anti-glare screen
The iPhone 17 is said to have a more durable anti-glare screen than the Ceramic Shield found on Apple’s iPhone 15 models. The iPhone 17’s outer glass is said to have an “ultra-hard anti-glare layer.” i.e. “more scratch resistant”. It’s unclear whether Apple plans to adopt the Gorilla Glass Armor that Samsung uses on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but Corning’s description of the latest technology is consistent with the rumors. It is also worth remembering that the new iPhone 16 Pro models have the latest generation ceramic screen with an advanced formula, which, according to Apple, is twice as durable as the glass on other smartphones.
A smaller dynamic island
According to Haitong’s Jeff Pu, Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a much narrower Dynamic Island thanks to the device’s use of smaller “metals” for the Face ID system. While the traditional iPhone camera has curved lenses that direct light to the image sensor, a metalens is a thin, flat lens with microscopic patterns etched into it that can focus light more precisely. Assuming this leads to a narrower Dynamic Island, this appears to be the first time Apple has changed this feature since its launch on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.
