Industrial exoskeletons can reduce physical activity by 40%: there are already working prototypes

Various exoskeletons have long been used both for the rehabilitation of people with musculoskeletal problems and in warehouses where they help carry heavy loads.

Italian engineers have also developed several exoskeleton prototypes to support workers at industrial plants. The clothes are attached to the back and reduce physical activity by up to 40%, protecting the shoulders, elbows and spine from possible injury. Each model is equipped with a pair of electric motors and algorithms for controlling mechanical prostheses, the weight of the structure ranges from 6.5 to 7.7 kilograms.

Exoskeleton models are prototypes developed within the scope of the project. Collaborative Cybernetic Systems, from the National Institute for Workplace Accident Insurance. As part of the program, the scientists designed three exoskeletons:

  • XoTrunk,
  • XoShoulder
  • and XoElbow.

The first provides support for the lower back, the second targets the shoulders, and the third strengthens the elbows. According to the developers, workers using these models will be able to lift much heavier equipment without fear of tearing their backs and injuring other limbs.

XoTrunk

This exoskeleton is for professionals who often have to carry heavy equipment. The team strengthens the legs and lower back, making the 20kg boxes feel like 12kg. The authors say that on the scale of regular eight-hour shifts, XoTrunk can impact warehouses’ productivity and safety.

XoShoulder

This model is designed to support workers who are subjected to the most physical exertion, including frequent shoulder strains. As an example, the engineers cited car workshops where specialists work under cars in elevators. During the working day, they have to hold heavy tools for several hours above the shoulder level, which adversely affects the musculoskeletal system.

XoShoulder solves this problem with a pair of electric motors, each producing 12 n/m of torque. The exoskeleton takes some of the load and helps you get the job done faster.

XoElbow

The latest model is focused on lifting loads close to the operator’s body. An example of using the XoElbow is in workshops where workers have to lift heavy tires above shoulder level to fit them on the vehicle. It is equipped with the same motors as the XoShoulder and weighs approximately 7 kg.

XoTrunk systems are currently being tested at various warehouses and facilities in Italy, with XoShoulder and XoElbow joining in the coming months. If the test is successful, engineers will discuss the possibility of commercializing the new exoskeletons.
