New color options available for MagSafe 3 charging cable

Pre-orders for the new M2 MacBook Air began on Friday, a month after it was announced at WWDC 2022. One of the highlights of Apple’s new laptop is the return of the MagSafe charging port – and for the first time the cable matches the color of the MacBook. New color options for the MagSafe 3 charging cable are now available from Apple.

Unlike older MagSafe versions, the new one has a separate MagSafe to USB-C cable from the plug adapter so you can connect it to a more powerful charger. And since the new MacBook Air comes in four different colors, Apple has created four different versions of the MagSafe 3 cable in each MacBook color.

Colors: Space Grey, Silver, Midnight and Starlight. Even if you didn’t buy the M2 MacBook Air, you can still take advantage of the new cables if you have a 2021 MacBook Pro. This is because both laptops use the same MagSafe 3 standard.

But unlike the MacBook Air, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro come with a white MagSafe 3 cable no matter which model you choose. With these new colors, consumers will finally be able to purchase a MagSafe 3 cable suitable for the Space Gray MacBook Pro. It is worth noting that the cable is covered with a woven coating to increase its durability.

Here’s how Apple describes the accessory:

This 2m charging cable has a MagSafe 3 magnetic connector that helps route the plug to the charging port on your Mac notebook. Connect your laptop to a compatible USB-C power adapter to conveniently charge from an outlet and enjoy fast charging features. The magnetic connection is strong enough to withstand most accidental disconnections, but if someone trips over the cable, it disconnects, keeping your Mac in place. The LED is yellow when the battery is charging and green when fully charged. Made with a woven design for durability.

Note that MagSafe 3 cables are not compatible with the legacy MagSafe port on MacBook Pro 2015 and MacBook Air 2017 (or earlier models). Source
