Case details

According to sources, Tesla hit the motorcyclist from behind. It’s unclear if its headlights are on, but that seems like an important detail given the Tesla driver’s assurances that he didn’t notice another vehicle in front of him.

  • The incident took place amid a long-running investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • The case could be added to a long list of similar ones to test the controversial driver assist feature.
  • in general there already caused 48 accidents resulting in 19 deaths.
  • Sixteen of these accidents involved Tesla cars colliding with ambulances, police or fire trucks while Autopilot was engaged.
  • Overall, the source states that there were 273 accidents involving autopilot between July 2021 and May 2022 in the US alone.

The regulator’s investigation raises questions about: Mass recall of technology possible. It’s not clear how this will look in practice – in which case the company will either physically take these machines to make changes or simply release a software update.

As this latest accident shows, recklessly using driver assistance features while driving and diverting your attention to other things poses clear risks, especially when it comes to the full self-driving package.
