The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on July 29 that it will issue a certificate for a new nuclear reactor design. This is only the seventh project in the US, but the first to include a mobile module: the reactor can be built in a factory and then transferred to the place where it will be operated – an enterprise, a power station, etc. – portable. This was highly anticipated because the project received approval during its final safety assessment in 2020.
Small modular reactors are being touted because they can avoid many of the problems that make building large nuclear power plants outrageously expensive. It is also designed to provide passive safety where no operator intervention is required to shut down the reactor in the event of a problem.
NuScale started the certification process in 2016. According to the NRC, the process required the company to provide technical information that allowed the panel to evaluate a range of security metrics, including: protection of the structure from “the consequences of a collision with a large commercial aircraft”.
The first such reactor is expected to be launched in 2030.
