Sony has announced that it has acquired Savage Game Studios, and although the terms of the deal have not been made public, this operation has a very special meaning in this new cross-strategy adopted by the company. Until recently, the company was focused almost entirely on its consoles, but things have changed for a while. And a lot.
Sony enters the world of mobile video games. Savage Game Studios is a developer dedicated to mobile video games, not console or PC games. The company was founded in 2020 by Michail Katkoff, Nadjim Adjir and Michael McManus, who have worked at Insomniac Games, Zynga and Rovio and therefore already have experience in the mobile video game segment.
Sony’s first mobile game is already in progress. The company hasn’t released any games yet, but their goal was to “defy the status quo and bring major innovations to mobile gaming,” and was already preparing an online AAA mobile game with no details disclosed.
PlayStation IPs transition to smartphone. At Sony in particular, they were excited about this acquisition and this new ambition in mobile phones โ maybe not that much. In this official announcement, they explained how these new efforts in this segment will allow “to give more people more ways to connect to our content.”
a new chapter. The agreement led to the creation of PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, a space that will “operate independently of console developments and focus on innovative experiences” and “will be based on new and existing PlayStation IPs”. For example, they have already managed to switch to mobile on their consoles.
First was expansion to PC. Thus, Sony completes a unique expansion into other segments: after years of focusing on its consoles and exclusive games, the company has recently announced that some of these legendary titles will also start arriving on PC. “God of War” and “Horizon Zero Dawn” are now combined with “Spider-Man Remastered” and “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” on PC because PlayStation exclusives are no longer so exclusive.
Diversifying business. The change in Sony’s stance is not instantaneous: the company has announced that by 2025, half of Sony’s video games will be on PC, not just PS5. The strategy is working very well and sales continue to rise, so now it made sense to switch to mobile as well. Will we see the wall scanner or Kratos on our smartphones? Of course, everything seems possible with this new philosophy of the Japanese company.
