Taro Kono, Japan’s new minister of digital technology, has declared war on floppy disks and other outdated forms of media. The government still requests them as a filing tool for about 1,900 types of documents. Now they want to transfer all these transactions online.

towards the future

Taro Kono announced his initiative by holding a press conference on Tuesday, August 30. He emphasized that in the past legal issues have hindered the modernization of cloud data storage. Therefore, government agencies often use CDs, mini-discs or floppy disks to receive reports, applications from citizens and companies, and other documents.

“The Digital Minister is declaring war on floppy disks. There are about 1,900 government procedures that require business to use floppy disks, eg floppy disks, CDs, MDs, etc. for applications and other forms. The Digital Agency will change these rules so you can use them online.”

The new minister has previously expressed a desire to modernize technology in the Japanese government, citing the country’s reliance on hand stamps and faxes instead of email during the COVID-19 pandemic.
