USB 4 version 2.0 will have an impressive speed of up to 80 gigabits per second. That’s twice the original USB 4 or even Thunderbolt 4.

The most important thing

The actual technical specifications of the USB Implementers Forum, which is responsible for the standard itself, have not yet been made public, but there is a very interesting statement in the announcement provided.

Key features of the updated USB 4 solution include: operation up to 80 Gbps based on a new physical layer architecture using existing 40 Gbps passive USB Type-C cables and newly defined 80 Gbps active USB Type-C cables,
– they write in the press release.

How this is technically possible is currently unclear. All details will be disclosed in the final technical specification, which will be announced later.. This is likely to happen ahead of the USB DevDays developer events scheduled for November 1 and 2 in Seattle and November 15-16 in Seoul.

The USB Implementers Forum also promises USB 4 version 2 compatibility with DisplayPort and PCIe, i.e. cables that support this technology. can be used to connect monitors and other computer peripherals that require high data transfer rates and high power supply.

The Verge notes that USB is always good for backward compatibility, but being able to use the same cable and still enjoy the flagship benefits of the new specification is another level. Using an old cable will save both manufacturers and consumers, as well as reduce the amount of electronic waste.
