Apple is late to Always on Display. And revealed how it is used on Android

You may not remember, but in 2009 Nokia introduced the Always On Display mode on the N86, which always shows the time. This technology was developing in the Nokia Lumia of later years, but it was Samsung who managed to get hold of it, making it the star feature in the S family.

The Always on Display mode in Android has always been very limited, mainly due to its effects on the energy level. Usually it’s a black screen, some notification icons and clock, so that at a glance we have an approximate overview of the phone’s contents. With the presentation of the iPhone 14 Pro, just like with widgets, Apple put on the table that there is another way to interpret them.

The Always On Display was not meant to be a black screen

There are two types of people: those who enable Always On Display and those who don’t. In the case of the latter, one of the reasons why it is not activated can be given as: little information and interaction this mod allows.

The Always On Display mode is usually a solution to see the time and notifications at a glance. However, they are not fully displayed and cannot interact with most phones.

Most of these mods don’t show more than icons of apps that send notifications (for example, an icon with the WhatsApp logo, but not the entire message), won’t let you reply from the AOD mod, and ultimately , this screen is far from what we see on the lock screen.

With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple wants a different and perhaps even more meaningful approach: Always On Display mode. you don’t have to give your lock screen information. The solution is relatively simple, doing nothing but weakening the AOD mod in question. Lock screenshowing exactly the same widgets, full notifications and information.

The transition between active screen mode and lock screen will also be a little smoother than Android. Just tap to open and let’s reach Lock screen and since the interface is exactly the same, there is nothing but the lighting animation of the panel.

Apple doesn’t even bow to black and white. It just reduces the brightness of the screen and makes the screen refresh at 1 Hz. This is an important fact, because there are a lot of phones Show on Always On Display when refreshing at 60Hzthus triggering energy consumption.

According to Apple’s own website (although it’s been seen firsthand whether this is true), this mod will not have much effect on autonomy, and are disabled when the mobile phone is on a desk or in a pocket. As always, Apple has been late to such a requested function, although it has shown that there are quite a few possibilities with this mod.
