An electromagnetic pulse is an energy wave that can fry the circuits of most commercial electronics, but you can protect your devices with a simple conductive shield known as a Faraday cage. We’ll show you how to make a Faraday cage from common household items to protect your electronics.

If you are preparing for a nuclear attack, you can also take care to store important equipment you will need in the future. The methods described below will not protect the smartphone 100%, but the chances of survival will increase significantly, especially if the epicenter of the explosion is far enough away.

However, the first thing to consider is personal safety and survival. Roman Pavlyuk, vice president of digital strategy at Intellias, specialist in telecommunications and radio systems, explained in detail how to do this. He studied radiation and radioactivity at the Lviv Polytechnic University, so he knows what he is writing about. Read the details on the Facebook page.

We protect important equipment from electromagnetic pulse

We choose the materials

We will need an ordinary shoebox made of thick cardboard without holes, thick food foil and preferably a reinforced hank tape. Our task is to build a kind of Faraday cage – a securely protected area where you can leave a smartphone and other small equipment, such as a radio receiver and a Geiger counter.

Look for a strong, dry box. The cardboard should be solid – it will serve as the structure to which you will glue the aluminum foil. While you can use other types of boxes, having a lid is important, so shoe boxes are often the best option.

As a result, we will need:

  • Shoebox.
  • Super strong aluminum foil.
  • Scots.
  • Roulette.

We measure everything well

You need to carefully measure the dimensions of the box, as you will need to constantly cover as much of the box as possible with foil. Measuring the box in advance will make this task easier.

  • Measure the length first, then the height.
  • Multiply the height by 2 and then add to the length.
  • Then add 2.5 cm to determine how much foil you will need for the first layer.

For example, a box 25 cm long and 10 cm high will look like this:

10 cm x 2 = 20 cm 20 cm + 25 cm = 45 cm Then add another 2.5 cm This extra foil will allow you to fold it over the top edges of the box.

Prepare the foil

Cut 3 pieces of aluminum foil according to your measurements. Stretch the foil from the roll until it reaches the length you set in the previous step. Then use a knife or scissors to cut as needed.

Then repeat this process two more times to get 3 pieces of aluminum foil of the same length. Using the previous example, you need to cut 3 pieces of foil, each of the desired length.

Next, you need to center the can on the first sheet of aluminum foil. The sheet of aluminum foil on your desk will be a rectangle with two long sides and two short sides. Orient the box on the sheet so that its shape matches the shape of the foil, with the long sides of the box parallel to the long sides of the foil.

The placement of the box does not have to be as precise as the jewellery.

Cover the box with foil

Wrap the foil around the box and secure with tape. Due to the 2.5 cm you added to the measurements, the foil should extend from the top of the box approximately 1.3 cm on each side. Fold the excess foil into the box, then tape it in place.

Next, fold the excess foil out of the shoebox. Part of the box will still be visible, but at least the bottom and two short sides should be completely covered with aluminum foil.

Fold the other two pieces of foil around the box on both sides. Fold about 1.3 cm of foil on one side into the box, then wrap the paper on the same side of the box, wrapping the first sheet of foil overlapping the short sides and bottom of the box. Then tape the piece of foil in place. Repeat this on the other side with the last remaining layer of foil.

Prepare the lid of the box

Use the can lid to measure another sheet of foil. It is recommended to wrap the lid of the can with a sheet of aluminum foil.

  • Stretch the foil over the table and close the lid.
  • When you have enough unopened foil to cover the entire lid, cut the piece you want.
  • Be careful not to tear the foil as it does not have overlapping layers like the rest of the box.
  • Secure the foil to the cover with tape.
  • Fold the foil around the flap shape to completely cover the top and sides, then use tape to secure it in place.
  • Fold the foil under the flap so that the inside of the side walls of the door are also covered with foil.

You can add more layers of foil if it is torn or if the lid of the box is too large to be closed with a leaf.

We hide gadgets inside

It’s best if you have several smartphones or an extra phone that you can put in a box and turn off, just in case, because the moment the danger of a nuclear attack is announced, nothing should distract you. first missions. Therefore, gadgets need to be pre-charged, turned off and put in the box. You can put an additional power bank and other necessary equipment there.

The cover foil, which is in direct contact with the box foil, will form a barrier that can direct the energy released during the electromagnetic pulse around the electronics stored in the box. It is important that the foil on the inside of the lid is in contact with the outside of the can walls.

Now the box itself is completely covered with aluminum foil. To ensure that all three sheets of foil are in constant and direct contact with each other, you can also wrap them with tape. There should be no holes or gaps in the foil.
