At full brightness, the Pixel 7 Pro display consumes a lot of battery

Google recently launched the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro globally, and they seem to be selling pretty well this year. The devices include several important updates for the display, camera and software. The search giant has promised better battery life with the new Pixel smartphones, but a new report suggests otherwise.

According to XDA Developers, the Pixel 7 Pro’s display has a negative impact on overall battery life. While testing the device, they noticed that its screen consumes a lot of power when the brightness is maxed out. The phone’s battery was found to drop by 10% after only fifteen minutes of screen use.

The report puts the Pixel 7 Pro’s power consumption between 3.5 and 4 watts at 600 nits. But at a maximum brightness of 1500 nits, it reaches 6W of power, which significantly drains the battery. For comparison, the post says that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra draws 4W at 1,000 nits, while the Pixel 6 Pro draws 4W at around 800 nits. This means that the problem is only on the Pixel 7 Pro. The vanilla Pixel 7 doesn’t seem to have such a problem.

It is worth noting that using the phone indoors and at low brightness will not cause that much battery consumption and users will only notice this when using the device at higher brightness for a long time. If it’s a software issue, Google can easily fix it with an update. However, if the problem is in the hardware part of the device, making the panel more effective will not work.
