Stanford has created a giant camera with a resolution of 3200 megapixels

The camera was called Ancient Space and Time Survey. The first images from him are expected in 2024. It weighs three tons and is capable of shooting at 3.2 gigapixels.

what is known

  • This camera is designed to capture the starry sky and various objects in space.
  • LSST is designed for daily data collection of 15 terabytes.
  • It uses a 3.2 gigapixel LSST detector, consisting of 189 charge-link sensors and a 1.57-metre lens.
  • While shooting, heat is generated with a power of about 1100 watts, so the system is cooled with the help of fans.
  • A cargo Boeing 747 will be used to transport the camera to the observatory.

In the near future, experts plan to create six replaceable filters that will be attached to the lens. Each of these filters will pass only certain waves, making it possible to photograph objects at a clearly defined distance from Earth.

The combination of a 3,200-megapixel matrix, a powerful supercomputer, a complex data processing and distribution network, and a massive telescope perched on top of a mountain in Chile promise to shed light on the mysteries fundamental to our understanding of the universe.
