Earlier in the day, FedEx head of transformation Sriram Krishnasam announced to employees that development of Roxo (part of an internal project called DRIVE) has ended.
While robotics and automation are the pillars of our innovation strategy, Roxo does not meet the required short-term requirements of the DRIVE project. While we are ending research and development, Roxo has served a valuable purpose: to rapidly advance our understanding and use of robotics.

FedEx said the robot is designed to travel within a five to eight kilometer radius from local delivery centers and previously said its “most advanced testing period” will be in 2021.
Roxo’s shutdown followed news in early October that Amazon also ended field trials of its Scout delivery robot. Amazon said it didn’t completely halt development of the robot, only “reducing the scope of the program.” The company said some aspects of the program “did not meet customer needs,” but did not explain why.
It is worth noting that the robot courier market, although not very large, is promising. There is also talk of ending the programs of so-called “last mile” couriers in both cases. At the moment it is too early to say that such robots will not be used for delivery in the near future.
