Is Tesla out of competition? StoreDot develops a revolutionary battery for electric cars

At launch, the company claims the 100in5 battery is lighter, charges faster, and even lasts longer than anything Tesla has to offer. It is worth noting right away that the battery market is full of speculation, loud statements and promises, and more than one company has previously presented another “Tesla killer”, which turned out to be practically not such a revolutionary solution.

What is known about StoreDot

StoreDot, an Israeli company that describes itself as “a pioneer of ultra-fast battery charging technology for electric vehicles,” recently demonstrated its capabilities. The company delivered the exceeded products 1000 cycles Elekrek said it’s in a production-ready form factor that’s perfectly suited for use in electric vehicles.

Are StoreDot batteries really that revolutionary?

StoreDot’s new high energy density cells are delivered in bags to partners worldwide for testing. Among them are companies such as:

  • China Geely (Pole Star),
  • German Mercedes-Benz,
  • Vietnamese VinFast.

As StoreDot claims, the 100in5 cells showed off the promised features, allowing drivers to charge a distance of 160 kilometers for every 5-minute charge.

The 100in5 batteries were repeatedly charged from 10% to 80% in just ten minutes and then discharged in an hour. They did this more than 1000 times before degradation was detected below the initial 80% capacity threshold. In fact, during the first 600 cycles, no degradation occurred when cells were sequentially charged from 10% to 80%.

The latest testing is a landmark event not only for StoreDot, but also for the global battery industry and the entire sustainable mobility ecosystem. Our 2022 product performance target was to achieve 1,000 cycle sequential ultra-fast charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in ten minutes with an energy density of at least 300 Wh/kg.
– Emphasized Yaron Fine, StoreDot’s vice president of research and development.

Fine noted that the company not only achieved the goal, but also exceeded it. He added that StoreDot has an improved formula in its lab that allows it to perform more advanced.

StoreDot says it’s committed to bringing the tech roadmap to the world’s auto companies without too much fanfare (which will put many battery development operations ahead). This development program stretches into the future, aiming to provide a range of 160 kilometers after 2 minutes of charging for 10 years.

Revolutionary technology?

The StoreDot company states that it achieved this result thanks to the use of heavy silicon anodes. Silicon can absorb large amounts of lithium ions with little resistance. This means that the batteries using them can charge very quickly and be incredibly energy intensive. However, there is a big problem with this technology – silicon anodes expand when charged, so they can only withstand a very small number of cycles before deteriorating significantly.

StoreDot has done nothing but come up with a revolutionary solution to this problem and in the process created one of the most durable commercial batteries ever (if they really work as the manufacturer claims).

Field tests

While automakers’ testing of StoreDot batteries may reveal a number of issues, this bodes well for the future of battery tech (if everything looks exactly as it was released). Even so, the ability to increase range in a matter of minutes will make traveling with electric cars much easier and will greatly contribute to its promotion.

As for StoreDot, it is worth waiting for the first certification of its elements and the demonstration of real possibilities on the roads as part of electric transport, since no independent studies have been carried out so far and the figures declared by the manufacturer look very fantastic. being right. The company is currently working with manufacturing partner EVE Energy in China on getting ready for mass production of 100 5-cells and says it plans to begin mass production of battery cells in 2024.
