A new report has revealed that Apple’s latest line of iPhone 14 smartphones seems easier to repair than the previous model. However, it’s not all good news as there is a catch. The Cupertino-based giant said the new iPhone 14 series will be easier to fix than previous iterations. However, this simpler fix is apparently not available from third-party repair shops. The news comes from sources in the third-party repair community who told Engadget that jailbreaking the iPhone 14 is definitely easy, but getting it back together and working as intended is a whole different matter.
According to the report, the iPhone 14 has two ambient light sensors that help control the brightness of the screen. However, if an unauthorized replacement screen is used, these two ambient light sensors will stop working completely. This means that your iPhone’s screen will be completely black unless you somehow remember the exact position of the screen brightness slider and adjust the brightness manually. But now you have to configure it manually each time. The problem stems from Apple’s “part link” restriction, which effectively adds a unique digital identifier to individual components that the iPhone 14 recognizes. Therefore, the use of unauthorized parts causes some components to fail.
New parts will require Apple’s proprietary software and an Apple-authorized technician to test them. In the past, third-party manufacturers could use a special device called EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Permanent Memory) that allowed information stored on the EEPROM microchip to be overwritten. This allows technicians to read the ID from the original screen and place it on the replacement panel only. However, this process seems impossible on the new iPhone 14 series.
