At the beginning of their existence, power banks were created specifically for phones and smartphones. The first copies, presented in 2001, were small capsules with a finger battery inside. Realizing the usefulness of portable batteries for laptops came a little later and required the development of new battery types. For this reason ordinary power banks are not suitable for laptops. we exist 24 channels I decided to tell you how to choose the right power bank for your laptop.

What features should you pay attention to?

A laptop is a much more powerful device than a smartphone or watch. does not charge via a standard USB port. The developers have long created a new standard of universal connectors with a power reserve – USB 3.1 and Type-C connector, designed for a current of 100 watts. Today, many manufacturers have either already migrated or are in the process of migrating to this standard, especially as the EU has passed new laws requiring companies to install Type-C on all their devices. The market is not short of this technology, so it shouldn’t be a problem to find a power bank with USB 3.1 and Type-C connectors.

But the presence of a bidirectional Type-C port of the 3.1 standard on a laptop does not guarantee its operation from a power bank, a cable that supports this standard is required. If the laptop’s power bank comes with its own cable right out of the box, you don’t have to worry. However, not all manufacturers sell the cable with the power bank – sometimes it needs to be purchased separately.

By choosing the wrong cable, at best you will not get the desired result, and at worst you will damage your devices. Be sure to check the packaging the cable is sold in so that its specifications match the needs of the power bank. You should not save money when choosing a cable, because cheap ones will not work well, cut off the charge or not charge the laptop at all.

If your laptop does not support charging via the USB Type-C port or there is no such connector, you can purchase a special adapter for the standard round power connector.

When choosing a power bank, pay attention to its capacity: it should be equal to or higher than the capacity of the laptop charger. You should look for this information on your device – they all have a special information tag. Here, power is shown in Watts (W), output voltage in Volts (V) and current in Amps (A).

As mentioned earlier, power banks in the market are mostly designed to charge phones, smartphones, fitness bracelets and other low-power devices. Therefore, the output voltages are mostly 5 volts – this is the most common value for modern devices. The current used to charge them is also small – about one ampere. But the laptop will not charge under such modest parameters. It needs an output voltage more than 12 volts. Many modern laptops require voltage 15-20 voltsTherefore, power banks are often equipped with special switches.

The current to charge a powerful laptop should also be higher than tablets or smartphones (an average of 3 amps). If the current is much lower than the device requires, the laptop will charge for a long time at best. Then there will be no talk of any work in the charging process.

This parameter is also important, because laptops consume a lot of energy and have rather large batteries. External batteries for charging laptops usually have a capacity of more than 10,000 mAh, while the average power bank for a smartphone can sometimes have a capacity of up to 5,000 mAh.

That is, for long-term operation of the laptop, it is better to buy a power bank with a large reserve of capacity. But we warn you: there are many fakes in this segment, so it is worth remembering that large-capacity devices are expensive. and very tart.

Many manufacturers point to the “versatility” of their power banks. However, such claims should be treated with suspicion. Check the user manual carefully for any specific indication that the power bank can charge laptops.as well as a description of the ports and cables where this happens.
