IBM unveils the world’s most powerful quantum computer

A traditional computer stores and processes data in binary bits in the form of zeros and ones. Quantum uses qubits that can be zero, one, or both at the same time. This increases computing power exponentially with each new qubit, making it possible to perform calculations impossible for conventional computers.

What is known about the IBM Osprey

have power 433 qubitsThe IBM Osprey is by far the world’s most advanced quantum processor. It contains twice as many qubits as the previous record holder, Xanadu Borealis. 216 qubits.

The Osprey has a similar architecture to its predecessor, consisting of a single layer of qubits over multiple conductive layers, helping to compress more qubits while reducing error rates. IBM claims that a normal computer would need more bits than atoms in the known universe to reproduce the Osprey processor, claiming that the capabilities of this machine are far beyond the capabilities of any conventional computer.

To be continued

However, that’s not all. As impressive as this year’s updates are, IBM says the real turning point will be next year.

  • The Condor quantum processor, which is promised to be introduced in 2023, 1121 qubits.
  • Also, a new modular processor called Heron will be able to combine several 133-qubit blocks.
  • It will also be released at the end of 2023 IBM Quantum System Two. This modular system will be the basis for quantum supercomputers containing several processors with communication channels between them.
  • IBM plans to create a quantum system with multiple components by 2025. 4000 qubits.
