The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 430 million people worldwide currently suffer from hearing loss. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable due to the use of headphones.

Previously published research shows that people generally choose a headphone volume of 105 dB, while in entertainment venues the average volume ranges from 104 to 112 dB, which is above acceptable levels (80 dB for adults; 75 dB for children).

The scientists reviewed 33 studies involving 19,046 people. The researchers also estimated the global number of people who may be at risk of hearing loss based on the estimated number of people aged 12 to 34 (2.8 billion) in 2022.

Many teens may lose their hearing

The analysis shows that dangerous listening practices and visiting loud entertainment venues are common worldwide – 24% and 48% among teens and young adults, respectively.

Based on these numbers, the researchers estimate that the global number of young people potentially at risk of hearing loss as a result is between 0.67 and 1.35 billion.

The researchers say governments around the world urgently need to prioritize “safe listening” policies to protect hearing health.
