Power bank from a car battery: what you need to know and how to do it yourself

Let’s immediately note that it is worth resorting to such manipulations. only if you have a good understanding of what you are doing. The whole scenario is pretty simple and the final device consists of relatively inexpensive components.

Battery

In this case, there is no need to follow a special approach in battery selection. It can be both your car or specially purchased for the role of a power bank. If you have enough capacity, even the cheap one will do.

Please note that old batteries may not “pull” all household appliances, so you will have to make a choice. They can also lose their charge very quickly. But even such a system can help you. However, if you start to set up a home power bank by purchasing a new battery, you should opt for a larger capacity device, even if it will damage the strength of the starting current.

Some batteries cost more because they can provide the strong starting current needed to start powerful car engines. For home conditions you do not need this functionality. You should be more concerned with an indicator like: battery capacity (measured in ampere-hours). It is better to buy a battery with a capacity at least 70−75 amp-hours.

Don’t forget to charge

The battery itself will need to be recharged somehow, because the energy in it is not taken from anywhere. Battery chargers work very simply: when there is electricity at home, you connect it to the network, plug the terminals into the car battery and wait. Such chargers can give 6 or 12 volts. The second option is preferred for faster charging of the battery.

You just need to charge the car battery in a separate, non-residential, ventilated room. The best is a garage or balcony.

converter

Most batteries produce a voltage of 12 volts, which is not enough for household needs – 220 volts is required. Therefore, it will not be possible to connect anything directly to the battery. Joyful an inverter is required — a device that converts voltage. The cost of such devices varies greatly depending on their power, capabilities and additional functions.

We choose an inverter

Inverters are very different, there are a large number of them on the market. To choose the right one, pay attention to three things: power, connectors and the ability to charge the battery.

  • Inverter power. The higher the rated power, the more devices can be connected to it. Every electrical appliance in your home has special information labels with power consumption characteristics. Add them up, add some margin just in case, and pick an inverter that can give you the power you need.
  • Inverter connectors. Some inverters are equipped with not even one, but several sockets at once, which makes it possible to use them as a network extension cable, and some even come with USB connectors. This makes it possible to charge appliances without taking up a valuable outlet, which might be needed for a refrigerator or kettle.
  • The ability to charge the battery. Some of the more expensive inverter models allow you to charge the car battery from the grid while there is electricity in the house. This will help eliminate the need for a battery charger.

After connecting the battery to the inverter with a cable, you can connect all your appliances in the house with extension cables. Most inverters have built-in monochrome displays to display information such as how many volts the system consumes, how many watts it consumes, how much battery is left.
