Outdated Sounds is a new project whose creators Cities and Memory are calling “the world’s largest collection of outdated and disappearing sounds.” It consists of more than 150 sounds that are becoming increasingly rare, including many mechanical sounds of old video games, modems, telephones, obsolete equipment.

The list includes the classic Nokia 5120 ringtone, the sound of an old Seagate hard drive spinning, an old analog radio tune, the sound of typewriter keys.

Cities and Memory has released remixes for each as well as the sounds. They are intended to reflect on “the memories and emotions these sounds evoke”.
Obsolete Sounds aims to draw attention to the world’s disappearing soundscapes, highlight sounds worth preserving as part of our collective cultural heritage, and help us think about how to save them before it’s too late. – Says Stuart Fawkes, founder of Cities and Memory.
Given the speed with which old technologies are being forgotten today, the project will always have something to add to its collection.
