Updates have always been a tough topic in the Android world. Many versions, new versions of Android come out every year and it is not easy to keep all terminals up to date. However, in recent years manufacturers have stepped up (more or less) and announced various update commitments. Now says OnePlus, take this commitment a little further.

Last year, OnePlus announced it would offer three years of Android updates and four years of security patches. Now, at the OxygenOS Open Ears Forum in London, the company assured that it will present “some selected devices released in 2023”. four years of Android updates and five years of security patchesso it fits Samsung’s suggestion.

With this new commitment, some OnePlus devices that will launch (or should get) Android 13 from 2023 are expected to go all the way to Android 17. There will also be an additional year of security patches. As stated by Gary Chen, Head of Software Products at OnePlus, and compiled on 9to5Google and Android Autorithy:

“As a user-focused company, we are doing everything we can to improve the user experience. As more and more users are using their devices for longer, we want to make sure we’re able to deliver this feature. This new upgrade policy will give users fast and smooth OnePlus over the phone’s lifetime. The latest functional and security features needed to support the experience.”

Far too good. The problem is OnePlus has not specified which terminals this policy will apply to. All we know is that it will apply to “certain devices released in 2023 and beyond” and this will open the door for them to be high-end devices only. Let’s remember that OnePlus now has a wider range of mobile phones like the mid-range Nord. We’ll have to wait for OnePlus to decide to find out.

In this sense, and in the case of Europe, in September of the same year, the European Union’s producers were at least three years of major updates and five years of security patches. In addition, manufacturers should release the update within two months at the latest and not reduce the performance of the devices after the update.
