Apple wants to expand iPhone’s satellite communications capabilities

In the future, Apple may expand the bandwidth of satellite communications on the iPhone, which will allow the use of a new channel not only for transmitting the distress signal, but also for video calls. This was reported by 9To5Mac.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has approved Apple’s application to register a technology called the “Communications Terminal.” From the statement, it seems that Apple is considering the possibility of transmitting both short text messages and multimedia files, and even streaming video via the satellite communication channel.

Matt Ettus, Michael Trela, Simona Paulotto, and Carlo Di Nallo are listed as authors of the patent. It is known that at least two of them took part in the development of the satellite antennas used in the iPhone 14.

Often, companies’ patent applications do not guarantee the implementation of certain technologies. However, 9To5Mac believes Apple will seek to maximize the potential for satellite communications in the iPhone, as the IT giant has already invested $450 million to support its Emergency SOS infrastructure.
