In November 2021, there were reports that Apple may equip the iPhone 14 Pro smartphone with a USB-C connector instead of the usual Lightning port. However, now there is other information.
According to iDropNews, this year the Cupertino-based giant may retain the legacy Lightning port for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The source adds that the main reason for the reluctance to switch to USB-C ports is profit. It was previously thought to be on hold as the iPhone maker plans to eventually switch to a portless design. But the latest report states that Apple is driven solely by the issue of profit.
Apple may charge royalties from any third-party vendor that tries to sell a Lightning cable. In other words, the transition to the universal USB-C standard will result in the loss of a stable income stream. Therefore, it is likely that the company will stick with its branded design until the iPhone finally appears on the market without ports.
However, all is not so bad, as Apple plans to upgrade the Lightning port on the iPhone, at least. The new version of the port will have USB 3.0 speed, not the old USB 2.0 speed. This means that the next generation iPhone will support higher data rates. However, sources claim that such a port will not appear on the basic iPhone 14 and the new iPhone 14 Max. Source
