The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which includes companies like Apple, Google and Samsung, has announced a new Qi2 wireless charging standard. This was reported by The Verge.
Compared to the first generation standard, the Qi2 has a higher rated power. While the first accessories with Qi2 will only support the old 15 W, later charger and smartphone manufacturers will be able to overcome this limit.
In addition, Qi2 has developed the stabilization system, which is responsible for the position of smartphones, headphones and watches on charging platforms. More magnets are used in the Qi2, which allows devices to fit more tightly to chargers, thus reducing the chances of mis-syncing.
Also, Qi2 integrates some kind of authentication system. In this way, smartphone and other device manufacturers will be able to block unapproved accessories using wireless charging.
The first chargers with Qi2 support are expected to hit the market in the summer of 2023. Smartphones with this technology will be released in the third or fourth quarter.
