Meizu was once one of the most famous smartphone manufacturers in China. But the company couldn’t keep up with the competition, and poor after-sales support alienated even its loyal fans. Meizu managed to survive, but was limited to annual smartphone releases. It also didn’t have the same relevance as other Chinese brands. Last month, Geely confirmed the acquisition of Meizu, and the brand’s use won’t just be for electric vehicles. Geely plans to enter the smartphone market through Meizu. This will be a comeback for Meizu and a start for Geely. The design of the new phone, which is expected to be called Meizu 20, has been schematically confirmed.

According to the first leaks, Meizu’s first flagship under Geely will be a flagship. The phone will arrive in Spring 2023 and will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, according to leaked Geekbench results. Now, there is new information that the flagship of the future will have satellite communications. This will clearly be a strong trend in 2023 as the flagship Samsung Galaxy series comes with it.

Meizu 20 design confirmed – key features revealed

In addition to the report, a new design patent was obtained from Zhuhai Meizu Tech Co., Ltd. reveals the possible design of the flagship Meizu 20. The diagrams show the classic design of a rectangular smartphone with straight corners. The device is likely to have an aluminum frame with the usual glass sandwich design. We can also see the small bezels around the speaker at the top of the screen and a hole in the middle. Going back, we have a quad camera setup. Unlike most of the current flagships, the Meizu 20 will not bring a camera island. Instead, we will have the raindrop design seen on the Galaxy S23 and LG Velvet series.

There are four holes on the back so this could be a quad camera setup or a triple camera setup with the last hole for the LED flash or sensors. In any case, some rumors point to a quad-camera setup with wide, ultra-wide, telephoto and macro shots. We’ll have to wait for more details. Other than Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Meizu 20 specifications are still a mystery. It is only known that it will have a 4700mAh battery with 80W fast charging. Given that this is a flagship, we can also bet on an AMOLED display with FHD+ or 2K resolution. Other features are likely to emerge over time.

As for satellite communication, it is difficult to determine whether the Meizu 20 will go with the Qualcomm system or choose the Chinese Beidu. It’s only a matter of time, but obviously the trend that started with the iPhone 14 series will continue.
