Pixel 4a was released in August 2020. At launch, the device featured premium Google Camera features such as Live HDR+, double exposure controls, night vision with astrophoto, social sharing, portrait mode, and Super Resolution zoom. The Pixel 4a is fast approaching its third anniversary, when software support for the device will end. So it looks like the device might miss the latest version of Android a bit, as the first developer build of Android 14 won’t be available for the Pixel 4a.
The Pixel 4a was originally expected to launch in May 2020, but was delayed to August due to the COVID pandemic and other issues. Despite the delay, Pixel 4a received Android 11, 12 and 13 updates, but it remains unclear whether the device will receive Android 14.
Google is following a similar timeline in Android 14 as it did in Android 13. The first developer preview has been released, and betas are expected to start in April and run through June and July. Android 13 was released on August 15, 2022. According to this scheme, Android 14 will most likely be released on the same dates.
It’s a pity that Pixel 4a’s third anniversary falls on August 3, 2023, just two weeks after the possible launch of Android 14. This means the Pixel 4a is not eligible for the Android 14 Developer Preview. The latest update may not be available for the device. While there is still time for Google to change its stance, luck is not in the Pixel 4a’s favor. As a result, the delayed launch of the Pixel 4a and its fast-approaching third anniversary could mean that Android is missing the latest version.
