Apple is preparing to develop the LiDAR scanner in the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models with the help of a new supplier. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Sony will replace Lumentum and WIN Semiconductors as the sole supplier of Vertical Void Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) in the iPhone 15 Pro models. This step is expected to reduce power consumption or provide better ToF performance for the same power consumption.
This new technology is expected to significantly improve the camera and potential augmented reality (AR) applications on the iPhone 15 Pro models. Sony’s new ToF VCSEL solution integrates VCSEL and driver IC, which means LiDAR scanner can offer better ToF performance and consume less power. This technology can significantly improve night mode, low light photography and Cinematic mode.
Combined with the latest processor and display technology, this new ToF sensor could make the iPhone 15 Pro models the most energy efficient devices ever. Since we’ve already heard that Apple is working on a new A17 Bionic chip and new display technology, this improvement should revolutionize the battery life of the iPhone 15 Pro models. The rumors about the iPhone 15 Pro models do not end there. The devices are also expected to feature a new titanium coating and periscopic lenses on the larger Pro iPhone, which could lead to even more significant improvements in the camera department.
Overall, Apple’s decision to switch to Sony as the exclusive supplier of ToF VCSELs for the iPhone 15 Pro models is expected to result in lower power consumption as well as significant improvements in camera and AR applications. According to a recent report, Apple will increase the RAM from 6GB to 8GB for future Pro models. With all these improvements, the iPhone 15 series could be Apple’s most impressive flagship phones yet.
