Xiaomi’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, announced on his Weibo page that an important update has been released for last year’s flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

After installing the update, a quick access button will appear in the camera app interface for 2x zoom from the main camera without loss of quality. It also clarifies that the 2x zoom is achieved through hardware framing and the capabilities of the 1-inch image sensor, rather than digital zoom, which degrades image quality. It is also worth adding that the phone has a separate telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.

Shooting with 2x zoom without loss of quality was available on the Xiaomi 13 Pro at the time of the smartphone’s launch and was well received by critics. As a reminder, both smartphones are equipped with the same Sony IMX989 image sensor. Against the background of supporting the Xiaomi 12S Ultra with updates, the company is preparing for the release of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, which will be released in March or April.
