Samsung is reportedly testing a new hinge design for its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone, which is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2023. The new hinge, called the “waterdrop” hinge, bends the screen inward rather than tightly. radius when the phone is off. This design is said to offer numerous benefits, such as a less noticeable screen crease and no gaps when the phone is folded.

One of the biggest advantages of this new hinge design is that it can allow the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to be thinner than its predecessor. The report claims the phone will be 14mm or less, while the Galaxy Z Fold 4 claims a maximum thickness of 15.8mm.

However, the report points out that Samsung lags behind some of its competitors in cornering tests. Oppo, for example, is promising 400,000 builds on its Find N2 and Find N2 Flip phones, double that of Samsung. Still, Samsung aims to retain around 85% of the phone’s original strength after 200,000 builds.

Samsung’s new hinge design is currently in the “final” phase of testing, and the company is expected to finalize the design once testing is complete. The company will also test the reliability of the new hinge and display panel by folding the phone between 200,000 and 300,000 times.

Overall, Samsung’s improved hinge design for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 demonstrates Samsung’s continued commitment to innovation in the foldable smartphone market. As more companies launch their own advanced devices, Samsung will need to keep pushing the boundaries to stay ahead of the competition.
