Apple introduced the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models with LTPO displays that support ProMotion refresh rates from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. The panel allows both smartphones to offer always-on display (AOD) capability. The Cupertino-based company has limited these screens to Pro models, and this will likely continue to apply to the upcoming iPhone 15 series.
According to the report, standard iPhone 15 devices will not come with an LPTO display, which should mean the devices won’t have ProMotion support and always-on display like their predecessors. The source reported that Apple has agreed to supply panels for the iPhone 15 to domestic companies and will soon begin mass production. However, only the Pro series supports LTPO 120 refresh rate, while the regular model and Plus model do not.
iPhone 15 models will require an LTPO display to support AOD, as the updated LPTO panels’ 1Hz refresh rate ensures the screen stays on all the time without draining the battery. AOD is a relatively new feature for Apple smartphones that recently appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
Earlier, renowned display analyst Ross Young also claimed that all models in the iPhone 15 series will support the dynamic island function, but standard models will not have LTPO panels due to production scale limitations.
The vanilla iPhone 15 models may not get the latest LTPO panels, but they may have a more power-efficient OLED display driver chip made using the 28nm process. Current models use a 40nm chip. The 28nm chip found in the iPhone 15 models is expected to significantly reduce power consumption, leading to longer battery life.
