Last year the Google Pixel 6a became a guarantee for those looking for the best relationship between price and performance, and in a few weeks we are expected to meet its successor, the Pixel 7a. Its appearance and some of its features have been leaked to Vietnamese website Zing News these days, and everything that has come out is promising.
more hertz. The Pixel 7a is expected to retain the shape of its predecessor in terms of screen diagonal. So, predictably, yes, we will have a 6.1-inch display that will support a 90 Hz refresh rate. The Pixel 6a only supports 60Hz natively — it’s possible to “unlock” this option — so this is a big first improvement.
A warranty chip. Mobile will predictably be driven by Tensor G2, Google’s SoC that comes with significant improvements in AI task processing. Made with 4nm photolithography, this chip has proven itself in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, but again, its purpose isn’t to win performance benchmarks, as with the Tensor G1.
more memory. It is also expected to have 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, which is more room for maneuver in all scenarios compared to the 6GB on the Pixel 6a, while the storage remains at 128GB. It would be great to have a higher-capacity option, but for now this version has been announced and it wouldn’t be surprising if Google reserved this option for its most ambitious models.
cameras. In the leak, it is said that the Pixel 7a will have two 12 MP sensors for both the main camera and the ultra-wide angle (no telephoto). However, other rumors say that there will be news for the main sensor, which could be the 64 MP Sony IMX787, which for example appeared in the Nubia Z50. The front will theoretically be the same as the Pixel 7/Pro with a 10.8MP sensor.
wireless charging. One of the most notable innovations in this version is wireless charging support, an option not available on the Pixel 6a. This will be a pretty limited option as it is rumored that wireless charging will only be available at 5W, but it’s still great news for those who missed the feature.
glass everywhere. Glass will lead the Pixel 7a’s design, except for the side frames made of metal. There will be a single SIM slot, but rumors suggest that Google will also offer eSIM support. The design will replicate that of the current Pixel 7 and the sensors as the main character the characteristic back bar.
Availability and price. The new Pixel 7a is expected to be announced at Google I/O on May 10, but its launch may be delayed until summer. It happened with the Pixel 6a, which was announced on May 11, 2022 but wasn’t in stores until July 21 that year. Regarding the price, Google is expected to keep the previous model’s starting price of 449 euros.
