Returning to the flagship smartphone market with the Meizu 20 series, the company owned by Geely now seems to be planning to raise its hat to the foldable phone category. Meizu’s Vice President recently confirmed that the company will launch a foldable smartphone by the end of this year, and we’ve even seen a patent for it. Now, while we wait for more concrete information, an informant has revealed that Meizu’s first foldable device will come with a massive 200MP primary camera.
According to a screenshot shared by WHYLAB on Weibo, Meizu’s upcoming foldable model, which will likely be called the Meizu 20 Fold, will feature a 200MP primary camera. It can be seen that the smartphone is associated with the ISOCELL HP1 sensor, which is older than the latest HP2 found in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Still, the sensor is said to offer impressive capabilities such as 8K recording, high-quality pixel binning, and fast autofocus.
This could give Meizu 20 Fold an edge over the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5, at least in the camera department. However, this is a far-fetched assumption because without a suitable ISP and software to support it, even a 200MP camera sensor is unlikely to be useful compared to other sensors. The brand’s newest flagship Meizu 20 Pro is equipped with a main camera of up to 50 MP, but we cannot comment on its performance in the photos yet.
Details about Meizu Foldable are very limited. A recent patent has suggested that it could be in the form of a clamshell phone similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip models and feature a new hinge design. We will learn more about the smartphone in the coming days.
