According to Mark Gurman’s weekly Power On newsletter, Apple plans to add apps to the headset from many different categories, including games that take advantage of the device’s features, fitness programs, and an app that lets users read books in virtual reality. The company has yet to find a reliable utility that can boost headphone sales, so it plans to follow the same strategy as the Apple Watch, including various apps in the hopes that one of them will “hit.”

It is important to note the difference between virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). VR allows users to immerse themselves in an unreal environment, such as an arena in the middle of a sporting event, while AR overlays a layer of computer data on top of a real picture.

What apps will be at the launch of Reality Pro?

• Apple’s mixed reality headset will work with most iPad apps, including popular apps like FaceTime and Maps, as well as third-party iPad apps with minor tweaks.
• The device is also expected to feature a Wellness app that uses sounds to relax users and also allows the headset to be used as an external display for a connected Mac computer.
• Video conferencing will be immersive, using VR to create virtual conference rooms with realistic avatars to represent participants.
• The Freeform app will allow users to write on a virtual whiteboard that others can see, and users will use VR to watch videos in a purely fictional environment.
• A VR version of Fitness+ is also expected to be available after the headset is released.

Headphone functions

• The headset will feature a VR portal for live sporting events, as well as games created by third-party developers who have had success with games created for other Apple devices.
• Users will be able to control the headset using eye and hand gestures, speaking to Siri, or via a connected keyboard from another Apple device.
• The headset will reportedly support “over the air” typing, but Gurman described it as “selective.”

An insider claims that the Reality Pro is the most complex device Apple has ever made and, at $3,000, it’s not something anyone can buy. However, Apple is reportedly working on a future version of the headset called Reality One that will be more affordable, although some features need to be cut.

As such, Apple’s Reality Pro AR/VR mixed reality headset is expected to include a variety of apps and features, including games, fitness apps, and immersive video conferencing. Although the device is expensive, it represents an important step in the development of virtual and augmented reality technologies. Plus, we’re finally getting a brand new product from Apple that hasn’t done anything truly revolutionary in a very long time.
