Google’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Pixel 8 Pro, is set to feature Samsung’s largest camera sensor. The ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor, released by Samsung two years ago, has a 1/1.12 inch 50MP sensor. The pixel size of the sensor is 1.4 µm and can be increased to 2.8 µm using the 4-in-1 pixel binning process, making it ideal for low light conditions. In contrast, the ISOCELL HP2 camera sensor used in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has 2.4 µm pixels after 16-in-1 pixel binning.

The ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor can also produce 100MP images using a remosaic algorithm and record 8K video at 30fps, 4K video at 120fps and Full HD video at 480fps. For fast, reliable and accurate focusing, Dual Pixel Pro features autofocus and Progressive HDR, which uses 24% less power than regular HDR and can preserve detail in highlights and shadows.

Google has been using Samsung’s camera sensors, display panels, modems and other electronic components since the launch of the Pixel 6 series and will continue to use them with the next generation of Pixel smartphones. Google’s Pixel 8 Pro will use a larger camera sensor than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with its ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor, positioning itself as a major competitor in the smartphone camera market.

While almost all smartphone brands except Samsung approach a 1-inch camera sensor in their flagship smartphones, Google’s choice to use the ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor demonstrates its commitment to providing its customers with premium camera technology. The Pixel 8 Pro will be an exciting addition to the Pixel lineup and a promising competitor in the flagship smartphone market.
