Sony has recently launched its new flagship smartphone Xperia 1 V in global markets, highlighting the unique Exmor T for mobile stack sensor that promises a significant improvement in low-light photography. Also, the device has the highest specifications, including a 4K OLED display and a cutting-edge Snapdragon chipset. Let’s take a closer look at the specs to determine if the device is worth its €1,399 price.

Design and display

The external appearance of the Xperia 1 V has not changed much compared to its predecessor, but this time the device is much more durable and easier to use. It has a square frame with straight edges and a vertical pill-shaped camera island. The back and front are covered with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which takes its durability to a new level. Additionally, the back and side bezels have a grippy texture, which is always appreciated on an expensive device.

The device has a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 21:9 aspect ratio. The display has modest bezels at the top and bottom, and the front-facing camera sits in the top bezel. The device has an IP65 and IP68 water and dust rating despite having a 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot.

Productivity and software

Xperia V packs impressive hardware like Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. What sets the Sony apart is the presence of a microSD card slot that allows for easy memory expansion. Large smartphone cameras generate a significant amount of heat, but the Xperia 1 V solves this problem thanks to its 60% larger heat dissipation volume than its predecessor.

Powered by a 5,000mAh battery, Sony Xperia 1 V supports 30W wired charging and allows you to charge the device up to 50% in 30 minutes. The smartphone also features wireless charging and reversible wireless charging. According to Sony, the battery will retain at least 80% of its capacity after three years of use. The device features an improved front speaker set equipped with a new amplifier to provide a more dynamic and rich sound.

The phone runs Android 13 right out of the box and contains minimal viruses. Instead, Sony has included its professional programs for creators such as Photography Pro, Videography Pro, Cinema Pro, and Music Pro. Sony has made a useful change to the Photo Pro and Video Pro apps that allows their user interfaces to be displayed vertically. This change will improve the user experience when taking photos and videos in portrait mode.

As always, the most important advantage of the Xperia flagship is the camera system and this time it is quite special. The main built-in camera is a 52 megapixel camera with F/1.9 lens and 1/1.35” sensor. Sony calls it the Exmor T stacked sensor and is 70% larger than its predecessor. However, photos are taken in 48 MP resolution, thanks to the 4.3:3 aspect ratio, which converts to an additional 12 MP image in normal mode.

Sony separated the photodiode and transistor by placing them in separate overlapping layers. This allowed the company to adjust the size of each component independently, resulting in significantly improved light output and reduced noise levels. According to Sony, the new camera sensor can perform twice as well in low light compared to its predecessor.

In addition to the main camera, the Xperia 1 V has the same 85-125mm F/2.3-F/2.8 12MP telephoto camera with fixed zoom as its predecessor. There’s also a 12-megapixel sensor that supports a 16mm ultra-wide camera with autofocus. The time-of-flight (TOF) sensor was removed and replaced with AI algorithms for focusing purposes. Artificial intelligence algorithms also improve performance in modes such as Night Portrait, Daylight Portrait, and Night Sight.

Sony introduced S-Cinetone mode for mobile devices, which allows users to record video in preset cinematic modes that produce professional, authentic colors without the need for color grading after recording. Speaking of video, the camera phone can record up to 4K video at 120 frames per second. Sony’s Alpha camera features are also available on the Xperia 1 V, such as highly efficient real-time AF, real-time eye AF, burst shooting and more. Finally, the selfie camera has a 1/2.9 inch sensor. Capable of shooting 12MP images.

Price and availability

Sony’s latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V, will launch in Black, Platinum Silver and Khaki Green at the end of June. Specific market availability details have yet to be disclosed. The phone retails for €1,399 in continental Europe and £1,299 in the UK. Pricing for the US market is yet to be confirmed.
