(Low) brightness is still an issue with OLED TVs. LG has a new plan to fix this

LG has launched its latest OLED televisions, which significantly improves performance thanks to the new OLED evo panel that can be found in the G2 and C2 models. However, the company would already be considering further increase the brightness of your panels Thanks to a new technique, something that will come in handy to compete with Samsung’s new QD-OLED panels.

Thanks to a report by Korean media The Elec, the company said, add ‘micro lenses’ to your existing panels to increase their brightness by up to 20%. According to the report, this increase will be achieved by even saving energy consumption compared to existing LG OLED panels.

More brightness to compete with Samsung

With the new measure proposed by LG, The maximum brightness that the panels can reach can be increased up to 1,200 nits.. Let’s remember that the LG G2 is the LG OLED panel that can produce the highest brightness and reaches the highest brightness level up to 1,000 nits, thanks to its OLED evo panel. It achieves this thanks to its ‘Brightness Booster’ technology and the new cooler it contains. Instead, Samsung offers its QD-OLED panels with peak brightness of up to 1,500 nits.

“It is known that LG Display expects a 20% improvement in OLED brightness by applying a micro lens. Under the assumption that the product lifespan is the same, if the OLED brightness is increased, it will also save power consumption with the same brightness”.

The information presented by the media is that LG is still considering the possibility and if they decide to include the micro lenses in the panel, new panels will go into production this year at the earliest. The panels will be built in one of two factories owned by LG Display.

If the technology goes into production this year, It wouldn’t be until 2023 when we see it implemented in LG OLED televisions. Micro lenses are widely used in some LED LCD panels, including OLED mobile displays such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.
