BSC (Barcelona Super Computing Center) and Intel announced that they are planning to set up a lab to build next-generation supercomputers at ISC 2022.
It is claimed that supercomputers with more than one zettaflop power will be created in this laboratory. That is, they will be a thousand times more productive than the fastest supercomputers available.
Why do you need such productivity? To solve problems that modern systems cannot cope with. They will be able to create digital copies of the world and individuals, model the climate model with maximum accuracy, and examine the impact of global warming on climate and humanity. They’re also likely to help beat cancer. And yet let me learn more about the Universe.
The new supercomputers will be based on processors based on the open RISC-V architecture. In the future, they plan to use them in stand-alone machines and in the creation of various artificial intelligence systems.
The laboratory plans to spend 400 million euros. Investments are not one-time, the money will be invested for 10 years. Both Intel and the Spanish government plan to invest in the PERTE Chip program. The laboratory will be located on the campus of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
