The limits of internet freedom in Turkey have been the subject of much debate in recent years. The recent entry ban on Ekşi Sözlük has put these discussions back on the agenda. Also organizations that want to protect freedom on the internet against internet censorship takes initiatives and expresses their reactions.
One of these responses was recently conducted by the Free Software Association. Society,”In the spirit of internet freedom” at Kadıköy Square in Istanbul with the slogan he spilled a bite.
Free Software Association made a press statement about internet censorship in Turkey while having a snack. Some highlights from the press release were as follows:
“The institutionalization of internet censorship has been made possible by the enactment of Act No. 5651, also known as the ‘Internet Act’ in the public, which has a significant impact on our lives today. With the enactment of this law, internet censorship has now become a part of everyday censorship.
Thousands of websites were censored before the law’s first year was completed on the pretext of offending government agencies and issues such as copyright.
‘DisabledWeb’, where these websites are listed, was also censored this month.
(…) Bandwidth throttling, which has been used as a censorship tool for years, although it suffers mostly from the social media law, stands before us as a clear violation of net neutrality. Net neutrality is the equal treatment of data by service providers and governments.
Making shared data more difficult or easier to access based on parameters such as publisher site and content is a violation of net neutrality.
(…) As we enter the 30th year, first of all, the bandwidth of Twitter, the only source of communication and coordination for many people during the earthquake disaster, was narrowed at the expense of people, and then Ekşi Sözlük, who had to be a black belt for years drawing logo, made no apologies. The fact that it’s censored and like TV series has to add sites to the domain name because it’s still censored shows us where this mindset still stands. “
During the internet week, the association organizes all institutions and individuals with the ideal of free internet in Turkey. fight for free internet invited.
