Scientists from the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan conducted a study of what happens to the human brain at the time of death. Electroencephalograms (EEGs) of four comatose patients were analyzed before and after clinical cessation of mechanical ventilation, and it was found that the resulting global hypoxia markedly stimulated gamma activity in two patients.

This study is still incomplete, and with the few samples that researchers have, it is impossible to reach a satisfactory conclusion about life after death, or even when it all ends.

It is assumed that during cardiac arrest, the brain is inactive. However, animal models of cardiac and respiratory arrest show gamma burst and functional connectivity. To investigate whether these preclinical data apply to humans, we analyzed EEG and ECG signals from four comatose patients before and after ventilator withdrawal.
