According to Argentine paleontologists, the predatory dinosaur was the length of a three-story house and pierced its prey with its sharply curved claws. A scientific paper describing the species was published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.
Three dinosaur records
- The giant’s weight was estimated at six tons. that makes it largest megaraptor ever discoveredcarnivorous dinosaurs that once roamed the territory of present-day South America.
- The monster was 9 to 10 meters long – more than any previously known megaraptor.
- The skeleton of a new species has been found in Argentina’s Santa Cruz province. There were no mountains or glaciers and a tropical forest in the Cretaceous. called The southernmost megaraptor of all previously found.
The Reptile had two sharp curved claws on each front paw. The length of each was about 40 centimeters. Megaraptor ate small dinosaurs and tore its prey with its claws.
A few vertebrae, as well as fragments of ribs, thighs, tail, and forepaws, were found from the entire skeleton. In the photo above, scientists schematically showed which parts of the body belong to certain bones.
Shadow of death
New species named Maip macrothorax.
- The first episode, “Maip”, is named after the evil mythological character of the Teuelche Indians of Patagonia. The Spirit sent a “shadow of death” across the Andes that “kills by the cold wind”.
- The second part of the name, the “macrothorax,” describes the creature’s massive chest—about 1.2 meters wide. Mayp was one of the last megaraptors to live on Earth before the dinosaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago.
Mauro Aranciaga of the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences, lead author of the study, said he was thrilled when he lifted his spine and saw that it had the characteristics of a megaraptor. “Somehow I fulfilled my childhood dream: I found a new species. And it turned out to be a megaraptor – a group I am an expert in,” says the scientist.
