Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who study black holes, decided to study mysterious space objects from an unusual angle with the help of sound.
They created an artificial intelligence algorithm called Reverberation Machine. It is an automated search tool that uses data from NASA X-ray telescopes on the ISS. The algorithm was able to detect 26 black holes in space already absorbing nearby stars. 10 of them are placed so closely that the scientists were able to record the echo that occurs during this absorption process.
The researchers found that in the process of “eating” stars, black holes create a corona of photons and emit a jet of particles traveling at close to the speed of light. This process takes several weeks, after which the space object goes back into a low energy state.
The artificial intelligence algorithm was able to “voice” the light radiation by comparing elements of the spectrum with sounds of different frequencies. It turned out pretty scary. Otherwise it is difficult to imagine the process of “absorption” of the star.
