Let’s remind, there are 5 people on the missing ship. The names of four are already known: British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzad Dawood and his son Suleman, and Stockton Rush, founder and CEO of the diving service OceanGate. The latter, as can be understood from his own words, neglected security on his submarines.

what is known

In the aforementioned CBS story, Rush gives Pogue a tour of the submarine, stating that there is “one button” on the entire ship, and that the submarine “should be like an elevator.” Pogue also mentions that many of the submarine’s details look improvised, including the off-the-shelf computer screens, the “trailer world” top rail, and the use of construction pipes as ballast. At one point, Rush lifted a Logitech F710 Wireless controller that looked like it had 3D-printed finger extensions and said: “We control everything with this game controller”.

Released in 2010, the Logitech F710 controller is a wireless two-finger game controller for PC that uses a 2.4GHz USB receiver connection. While its bulky design may seem outdated by today’s standards, it’s been in production for 13 years straight and typically retails for around $29.99 on Amazon.

This isn’t the first time “Titan” has disappeared. Pogue tweeted on Monday, reporting last summer that the diver also disappeared for several hours while Pogue was on the surface, but still had contact with the surface.

The exact reason for the submarine’s disappearance is currently unknown, although using a $30 PC game controller to control it doesn’t give credence to the Titan’s design. Efforts are focused on locating the submarine and its crew, and then possibly an investigation will try to determine the cause of the incident. As the BBC reports, the “Titan” submarine is sealed from the outside, so even if the ship does come to the surface, the crew will not be able to escape unaided and will drown in the sealed capsule.
