A recently discovered coin was determined to be a denarius depicting the 2nd century Roman emperor Faustus I. Experts date the coin’s creation between 100 and 141 AD, placing it clearly in the historical period of the Roman Empire.

Sources in the Khortytsia National Reserve indicate that this find may be related to the Chernyakhiv culture. It is believed that these tribes may have acquired the coin through trade routes, which sheds light on the intertwining of connections between different civilizations of ancient times.

Other finds from the island include lead bullets, flints associated with Kazakh-era rifles, various buckles, fasteners, and fibula-sullgama. Also found were fragments of bombs, including those made of glass. From weapons to personal jewellery, each of these works provides insight into the lifestyles and traditions of bygone eras.

Excavation and research continues

The scientific expedition to Hortytsia has an importance that goes beyond simple historical knowledge. By collecting these fragments of antiquity, researchers are gradually reconstructing the past, painting a more vivid picture of life in the region now known as Ukraine in ancient times.
