Part of the beast’s backbone was excavated in the Thar Desert near the city of Jaisalmer. In the Mesozoic era, this region was the coastline of the Tethys Ocean, which separated the ancient continents of Gondwana and Laurasia. Experts have determined that dicreosaurid remains are about 167 million years old.

Scientists named the new species Tharosaurus indicus and assigned it to a new genus of therosaur. Tarosaurus had a long body, neck, and spikes on the back of its head. It is not much different from Diplodocus, but has, for example, a long indentation on the lateral surface of the cervical bones and nerve spines. Also near the dinosaur’s tailbone was the surface of the anterior vertebra, resembling a heart.

Paleontologists also believe that the region where the fossil was found may have played an important role in the emergence of Neosauropods, long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs.

Such studies have so far been limited in India due to a lack of resources, and science still has a long way to go to reveal how rich this country is in dinosaur fossils.
