It is a natural phenomenon caused by disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere. These disturbances create the glow when charged particles in the solar wind collide with particles in our planet’s upper atmosphere.

Although this phenomenon is a fascinating visual spectacle, it can have significant consequences that will affect satellites, radio communications and power grids on the Earth’s surface. As a result, continued research and development of systems for predicting and protecting against geomagnetic storms is essential.

As the Space Weather Monitoring Center explains, this aurora, which can be seen in Ukraine, Europe, Turkey and even Greece, was triggered by a very powerful geomagnetic storm G2. Although such an event is quite rare for Ukraine, it is not unprecedented. A similar phenomenon was observed last spring, but then mainly in Central Europe.

It is worth noting that the appearance of the aurora borealis in Ukraine has a unique feature compared to its more typical manifestation in the northern countries. While northern lights in northern regions usually appear in shades of blue and green, the aurora borealis seen in Ukraine displayed a striking mix of red, yellow and purple colors.
